Minimizing the stress of moving for seniors
Even the thought of moving is stressful for most of
us. But for seniors and the elderly, this stress
can be magnified for many reasons.
Imagine having to leave the home where you have lived
for many years, a home that is filled with family
memories. Besides being overwhelmed by the many
details that need to be looked after in a move, you may
be exhausted from lack of sleep or run down from lack of
proper nutrition. You may be facing health issues,
or caring for a spouse as well as yourself, and are
simply unable to do as much as you would like to prepare
for a move. Like many seniors you or your spouse
may be dealing with frailty, anxiety, sensory impairment
and maybe even depression.
For senior citizens and the elderly, these factors
often compound the stresses of a move. The result
can be that they feel left out of the decision-making
process, and that their preferences and concerns are
overlooked during the move. When their routines
are thrown out of balance and they feel they have no
control over the situation, they can be afraid of the
outcome, making the task of getting settled in their new
home even more difficult
